Chapter Ten

“Ms. Tucker, the doctor will see you now. Mr. Tucker, please wait here,” the nurse told Caleb as he stood up with Lucy. “Dr. Reid will meet with you after he sees your wife.”

Caleb had accompanied Lucy to Raleigh for her first appointment with an obstetrician. When the nurse called him “Mr. Tucker,” Lucy went completely still. A barely perceptible shake of his head was enough for her not to correct the woman. There were other husbands in the waiting room with their pregnant wives and no doubt he’d been grouped together with the other men.

He pressed his mouth to her ear. “We’ll talk about this later.” She nodded and then followed the nurse. He stared at Lucy until he lost sight of her when she disappeared behind a closed door.

“I’m willing to bet this is your first one.”

Calum stared at a slightly balding man sitting a few feet away. “Are you speaking to me?”

The man nodded. “Yes. Is this going to be your first baby?”

Extending his legs, Calum slumped lower in his chair. He wanted to tell the man to mind his business, but he didn’t want to be rude—especially since he had no idea how long they’d be stuck here together. “How did you know?” he asked instead.

“You seem antsy. This is my third rodeo and I’ve learned to analyze potential fathers just by their body language.”

“And mine?” Calum questioned.

“You’re wound so tight that with one more turn you’ll shatter into a thousand pieces. Lighten up, man. She’s going to be okay.”

There was no doubt Lucy would be okay. Calum wasn’t nearly as certain about himself. Not only was he wound tight, but he was also frightened. Before meeting Lucy, he’d believed he’d had his life together with a new home and thriving business. That changed the instant she’d walked into Pins and Pints and introduced herself.

Calum knew it wasn’t only her beauty that had attracted him. He’d found himself intrigued as to why a single woman would move to Spring Forest to open a business when everything about her screamed big-city sophistication.

He’d spent more than a year befriending her while hoping their friendship would evolve into a more intimate relationship. Well, his wish had come true. He just hadn’t anticipated it would take only one spin of the baby-making roulette wheel for them to hit the jackpot.

When Lucy had asked him if he wanted the baby, he’d told her he did. And he’d meant it. But what he truly wanted was to be a good father to his child, and he wasn’t sure he knew how. Swallowing down his fear, Calum forced himself to think rationally. He had time to learn to become a good father.

Calum smiled at the chatty man. “You’re right. She will be okay.”

“The first time my wife told me she was pregnant, I freaked out. At that time she was just my girlfriend. I met her in grad school, and we had enough student loans to sink the Queen Mary, but I knew I had to step up and do the right thing.
